Am I being ripped off?

Hi guys,

I just bought a 92 600sel and was told the following needed to be done but I cannot tell if I am being ripped off or not. Maybe you guys can help me decide if I am or not please. This is the list of parts, with prices and hours. Thanks for helping me.

1 Thermostat and drain coolant: 1hr labor plus $88.00 part
1 Temp sending unit: No labor and $25.00 part
1 Temp sensor: 1hr labor plus $38.00 part
12 Spark plugs: No labor plus $214.00 parts
2 Air filters: No labor plus $49.00 parts
1 Fuel filter: .75 hr labor plus $51.00 part
1 Battery: .4hr labor plus $145.00 part
1 Serpentine belt: 1.4hr labor plus $65.00 part
1 Steering idler arm: 1hr plus $68.00 part
1 Set front brake drilled rotors: $324.70 parts
1 Set front brake pads: $102.00 parts
1 Set rear brake drilled rotors: $303.74 parts
1 Set rear brake pads: $92.00 parts
3.5hrs labor to do brakes
2 Distributor caps: $440.00 parts
2 Distributor rotors: $154.00 parts
2 Distributor spark shields: $204.00
Labor for distributor repairs: 1.5hrs
2 Rear window regulators: 3.5hrs labor and $374.00 parts
2 Gal coolant: $48.00 parts
Inspection of overheading problems: 3hr labor
Repair left front door panel: 2.5hr labor

Total parts: $2785.64
Total labor: 19.05 hrs

If you guys would please help me decide if this new mechanic is honest or is just taking me for a ride like many and marking the parts up too high and pumping the labor times entirely too much. Thank you so much for helping me out.

I looked up a few prices on autohausaz:

Thermostat: $54
Spark plugs depend on which kind he is planning on using. Is he changing the wires as well?
2 air filter are a total of $22
Fuel filter between $11 and $19
S belt $38

I would look over your engine and decide what you can do yourself. You should also do a search of the w140 forum to see what DIY instructions have been posted for the jobs you have to have done.
What is he charging for labor?
If you update with your location, I am sure other members close to you can recommend a good shop. If you are in Michigan, I can give you a hand if you want to tackle some of the work yourself.

The only part that I think he didn't overprice is the 2 GAL of coolant.
I think he is even charging you for parts higher than the dealer would ask.
Also 3.5 hr for brake job is too much (I guess 1.5 would be more than enough).

Wow nice car. We like pictures. The '92 600SEL is a first year W140 S class model. If you post this under the W140 S CLASS forum you will definitely get a better answer. There is also lots of info there to search through. All I can tell you is that V12 models are rare and parts can be rather pricey.

Personally for all the work you are getting done it does not seem out of line to me.

If that much work was being done at a Canadian MB dealership, I feel that the cost would be astronomically higher than that.
If you can do some of it yourself, then so much the better.

That is one very long list!!

17 years luxury Mercedes?
That kind of recommendations can be written by Service Adviser without seeing the car and likely it was.
If you are in California, labor and tax would be over 3 grands making total of $ 6,000.
How much is the car worth?
Love the "Inspection of overheading problems: 3hr labor"
They inspect it on the the route to Vegas?

That car needs way too much work, no matter how you price it. Unless you buying the car for $0, then forget about it.
