Post I need help in chooseing a good code scanner

I have 2002 MB E200 (Germany car), i am planning to buy a code scanner but i am not sure which one should I get because I have three cars (MB, 2002 Nissan Sentra and 1997 Honda Civic) and i am looking for scanner to fit all of these cars, i prefer a universal scanner.
I am looking to have one of the following scanner, if they are good or your recommended one:

1- professional grade obdII/eobd code reader: Professional Grade OBD-II + EOBD Code Reader + Scanner - From China

2- acc005 auto scanner code reader: ACC-005 Auto Scanner Code Reader Can OBD2 OBD¬*¬*ACC-005¬*¬*¬*¬*- Dropship From China

3- Amazon.com: Actron CP9175 AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner with Freeze Frame Data for OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles: Automotive

4- ACC-009 AD-100( OBD & CAN Scanner )¬*¬*ACC-009¬*¬*¬*¬*- Dropship From China

5- ACC-007 Auto Scaner Cas 810 Code Reader¬*¬*ACC-007¬*¬*¬*¬*- Dropship From China

Please your advice.

thanks in advance

Hi, eng.tariq.

I think the first question is whether your cars have functional OBD-II ports. That was first a US standard and I am not sure if or when it might have been adopted in Europe. If you call local dealers with your VINs maybe they can tell you.

If you have OBD-II ports the only one of those with which I am familiar is the Actron and it works just fine. Getting codes is only part of the battle, though, since you have to translate the code to words and then interpret the words, the latter of which is the most important part. (And with the internet you can search for codes to find both translations and some interpretations, I posted MB codes in the 210 forum.) So the reader itself isn't as important at least from that perspective.

If you don't have OBD-II then at least for the MB you can go on ebay.de and search for carsoft multiplexer, that will plug in to the 38-pin service connector and do lots more than read codes. I don't know about compatibility with other makes, maybe the sellers have adapters or something.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I use an Actron unit myself. I doubt I'd buy one off the internet though. Auto parts stores, such as AutoZone carry them and you can look at all the different models they have. Go for the mid range priced units as they may not be loaded like the more pricey units but are more capable than the cheapest. 1996 is when OBD II came into use in the US. I don't know about European vehicles but considering how involved it is to program the computers, I imagine they will all work. The biggest advantage to buying local is if you have a problem, you can take it back and you don't pay shipping.

Dear Greg,

Thank you very much for the information i tried to call the dealer here in Buffalo but they do not have the database for the Germany cars VINs :-( how do i know if my car is using the OBD-II?

Because i have three cars (Germany MB), (Japanese Nissan) and (USA honda which i know that is using OBD-II), i am looking to have a decent scanner which can read the codes and interpret them also if that is possible (2- acc005 auto scanner code reader: ACC-005 Auto Scanner Code Reader Can OBD2 OBD**ACC-005****- Dropship From China

3- Amazon.com: Actron CP9175 AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner with Freeze Frame Data for OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles: Automotive
are doing that, they give the code number and description)

if you can guide me to know how to check if my car have the OBD-II and what code is it (W/S210, W210 or S210)? please.

OBD II will have a, I think, 16 pin connector. Swing by AutoZone and have them check for codes. They do this for free because if you need a part, guess what, that's what they sell. The plug will be a modified rectangle. One side will be longer than the other with slanted sides between them. Once you see the plug, you'll know it. ALL OBD II plugs are the same. If you're using the American OBD II system (and I think you are) it will work.

Europe came a bit later with the mandatory OBDII connector. A W210 would definitely have the old style X11/4 diagnosis connector at the engine bay but this 2002 car should have the 16 pin diagnosis connector at the driver's foot well too. The protocol may not be the US standard but I did not check, you should be able to find with a search which protocol is used at each MB.

The VIN probably starts with WDB210, it is the face lift model, actually one of the last W210 as W211 sedan sales started 03/2002. If it is a sedan E200, then it is either 210.035 or 210.048.
