4 cylinders are 2.3 and 6 cylinders are 2.6 & 3.0l. a wdbda24 should be a 2.3l 4 cylinder.

1) Where did you get the VIN from? It should be stamped into the engine firewall that protects the battery and on the driver's door sill ID plate

2) The 2.6L was introduced in the US in the fall of 1987. MBUSA sold 3,240 of that MY chassis, not in 1986.

This is pretty simple really. 2.3 = 4 cylinder, 2.6 = 6-cylinder. Count your plug wires, and you'll know what you've got.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Slipping an I6 into the space of the I4 is no easy feat . . . differences in radiator supports (removable vs. welded); wire harness, ECU, a/c, etc. Not a heck of a lot of sense in putting a stock M103 in.

Than I checked carfax for several 2005 E320cdi cars. All of them have I6 engine, while Carfax list all of them as V6. Several dealers repeat the error in their advertisements.
Program is only as good as people putting data in it.

A swap yes but was it only the badge that had been swapped? I did not find any comment if this car had a 6 cylinder engine or a 4 cylinder one.

The Russian VIN decoder too confirms that this car came with a 2.3 litre engine from the factory.
