Will Delayed Engine Shut Off Cause Damage?

Hello folks. I''m the proud new owner of a 1983 300D Turbo Diesel. Currently, the engine continues to run for approximately 10 seconds after I turn it off and remove the key. I am troubleshooting the problem and have found alot of helpful info. My question is, will my engine be damaged in the meantime until I fix the issue? Thanks in advance for any help.

A diesel engine is shut off by shutting off the fuel supply. No "ignition" system, of course, and nothing electrical is occurring in the process.

On your car, there is a vacuum motor of sorts that accomplishes this.

If it delays, it's probably because there is a problem building up required vacuum in a timely manner. Vacuum leaks, weak vacuum pump, bad "motor," etc. It probably isn't called "motor," but I can't remember the correct term, but it's clearly something that moves in response to vacuum.

Lots of vacuum lines easily disturbed by messing with oil filter.

So, it's just running like it always does until the fuel is cut off.
