unplug it? Are you crazy? You can't afford the car, get rid of it. You need something much cheaper if you are going to even think about unplugging the air bag.

Man, ditto that.

You'll see an error message or light all the time, too.

Any injured passenger will sue you, and your insurance company may void your policy or somesuch.

Plus you may not be around to worry about the cost of the steering wheel or door panel.

Did you know that there are additional pyrotechics (explosives) that tension your seat belts in a wreck? Want to disable them, too? It will cost a bunch to make the seat belts work again after an accident as well.

Since you plan to not be hurt or hurt any passengers, why not just plan to not have an accident?

Early air-bags had a limited life time but a 1998 car should not? If you don't need the air-bag, you still don't have to unplug it. If there is a malfunction, you did not seem to get rid of it. So what is the point really?

Why would you lose the leather on the doors if you fix the air-bag? You don't have to explode it in the car before you can change it.

In any case, it is more dangerous to drive with the air-bag left in place but unplugged than having a malfunction at the SRS system but keeping wires attached. The wires at the air-bag side should be properly short-circuited in the minimum, preferably the bag itself should be removed and destroyed (that isn't straightforward), then the wire to the SRS system should be connected to an appropriate resistor.

Still, fixing the issue should really be easier and air-bags are saving lives even when seat belts are used.
