Console getting very warm, transmission?

Hello Everyone,
I have an 87 300E with 245k that runs very well. I took a trip to Boston and back over the weekend (350 miles each way from PA) and I noticed about halfway through each leg that the center console was getting quite warm. The push buttons for the windows, the shifter shaft, even the radio buttons were very warm. I've never had the trans serviced except to change fluid every two years (I've had the car for 7 years now and 100k) It was a warm and humid night and my a/c doesn't work anymore. Is my trans overheating? The engine was normal and my gas mileage was quite good (around 26 mpg) I was cruising at about 75mph as much as I could. My 2 year trans flush is due. I checked the level yesterday while warm and in park and it read a little high over the two marks and was not discolored or burnt. Is it time to just use this car for shorter trips? I don't have any problems with the trans otherwise, it shifts a little hard sometimes but not too bad. Am I asking for trouble by taking it on longish trips now at it's age? Thanks for any help/ info.

Whoa, Nelson...two posts in five years, that has got to be some kind of record!

I can't imagine it is your transmission, but I would definitely suggest you get it on a lift and have it inspected. Something in a dark recess of my mind suggests the possibility of an exhaust leak or perhaps an overheating cat from too lean a mixture (which could account for better fuel economy). Well maintained these cars last a very long time, so I don't thing it's ready for grocery-and-church duty just yet.

Take care and enjoy the ride,

Heat is blowing back from the engine. Lots of airflow under there.

Thanks for the replies. I did replace the fuel injection system last year and never adjusted mix because it was running good. Maybe it is running lean. I'll have it all checked out. Thanks for the good ideas.
