'82 240d refuse to engage

Hie guys

Im having a prob with my new manual transmission '82 240D, sometimes it refuses to engage into gears. Any help

Also there is a switch which I understand to be an idling switch , just wanted to know when to use it.

Its consuming about a litre per 10km, is this okay, does the idling switch have anything to do with idling and how do I reduce or decrease the idling speed from the engine

thanx

Idling knob - gently press on the accelerator pedal to relieve the tension on the idling knob and turn it left or right to reduce or increase the idle speed. I have found that if the car is running right, that I can leave it at the lowest idle and never even have to touch that knob.

Transmission - there are some bushings in the linkage that can deteriorate and or completely fall out that could cause the shifting issue you are having. They are very cheap and not a real hard DIY job.

Thanx Len, I would like to agree on the bushings issue because I hit a few potholes some days back.

My idling sounds good so Im gonna leave it like that.

If I may ask something else, does MB require rear wheel alignment as well or just front wheel alignment

If you want, send me a note offline and I can send you a drawing of the bushings I'm talking about. Rear wheel alignment can be checked, but not adjusted unless you replace mounts, bushings, etc.
