R129 93 500SL Hard Top
I have a 93 500SL. Did not drive for a couple months, so, being the newbie that I am, charged the battery without disconnecting and blew out the instrument cluster. I sent it to the place in Canada, (they pick it up in N. Dakota). All is fine there.
BUT--I also reported to the dealer that the hard top will not come off. They responded with the following:
"Short test. Control unit will not read out information. Check all fuses, found one main 30 amp cracked, replace. Check the operation of the top control unit; windows, roll bar, and close fiunction work but no opening. Still cannot read out the information. Follow diagnostic chart and test. All powers and ground ok. The control unit is faulty. See PNA. Replace control unit and sync windows. recheck operation. The top works now but the windows do not go down automatically with the top operation. They do work when you express down with the window switch. Both of these functions are through the top control unit. The only thing Mark B. and I can think of is the open switch in the window motors are stuck closed. With would allow the top to work with then up. Customer just needs to open the windows before opening and closing top."
They show parts replaced as:
1 each 000-545-20-34 Fuse $4.28
1 each 129-820-00-97 Control Unit $1815.00
So, I drive it home 15 miles (like a dummy, I did not verify top operation at dealer) and when I tried it in the garage, still not working.
So, I brought it back--this is their new line:
"Customer says top does not work at all. Check hard and soft top operation, everything is working correctly except the right rear latch does not latch down. Needs RR latch assy. P/N 129-800-12-79 - $605.00 + 2 hours labor. Per RK we can install the latch at no charge to clients and discount the latch assy. Client declined repairs at this time.
So, a couple things come to mind:
1. Was it necessary to even replace the control unit?
2. Did they actually perform a viable test and have it work when siging off the first repair?
3. What could be the problem with the windows after the fix?
4. Should I have them do the last fix suggested?
Why would it not work after a 15 mile trip? I am EXTREMELY sceptical of their honesty and of their competence. The hard top will only appear to "suck down" a bit when trying to remove it with the center console switch.
I appreciate any help. If you would prefer, I can post this instead, but, as earlier stated, I cannot see how to do it.
Thank you very much.
