Clutch is the easiest thing to build. My 7.3 liter diesel in Ford has massive torque. When I bought it, with clumsy shifter I was often starting on 3rd gear just fine. The engine is 230 HP rated, but lot of owners tweak it up to 500 HP and clutch problems are unheard off.
But ... the engine alone is 900 lb and I need small step ladder to reach dipstick.

Ha, right- Diesels make huge amounts of torque, they just have a stronger clutch in those transmissions.

No question they should be offered in those power coupes. Why not have the option? I'm surprised there would be such an effect on bottom line that Mercedes would cut themselves off from the majority of a market segment. I hope by the time I'm ready for a badass newer model they're available. Even in my '95 E420 I'd love stick. I considered BMW 5-series when I was shopping just for that reason.

As for the MB manual transmission not being able to withstand the torque, I'm not sure about that. I know the clutch is the weak point, and its only built for the smaller engine benz's with ~200hp/200tq. However with a stronger clutch/pressure plate it would be hard for me to believe the internals of the trans are weak or wouldn't withstand our typical V8 that produces ~350hp/350tq. Again I'm not sure what they make our gears/shafts out of be it forged steel or what but I'm sure it would hold up. AMG 55/65/63 engines would definitely put a beating on any trans though!
The clutch would not be the issue but really the gears for the first gear and the axle handling the torque when it gets multiplied by the gear ratio. Of course the drive train following the tranny would also need to be built for the peak torque from a sudden clutch pedal shift. Power is basically not an issue, torque is. Gassers give power at higher rpm and lower torque which is good for the tranny.

I've been kicking myself for a while. I passed up on a chance to buy a W126 280SE with a manual, and an M110. Wow, that would have been some car to drive. Damn!

Maybe I should find a manual 300E and get the trans etc and swap it into my 300SE, or a T5.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

I don't think having a 3 pedal is not a bad after all. My friend tried it and it was great!
