Hi, new owner of 1991 SL500 here
Howdy, how are ya'll?
Just joined up. I am in the middle of purchasing a green colored 1991 SL500, it has an AMG badge on the back. It has 102,000 miles on it. I know nothing about Benz's besides I know I like the early 90s SL models. What forums should I be studying here, to get to know my car? It is not coming with an owners manual, so if anyone could point out some links that details what all the buttons and switches do, as well as the features of the car, that would be awesome. Don't worry, I do know what a "Search Button" is, and will usually use it before asking questions, but not always.
The dealer I'm buying it from has been driving it for the past two years, and now he is selling it. It is in the shop for some cosmetic stuff right now, and I'll be picking it up Friday afternoon.
It has some minor problems, but I'm not too worried. I'll only be keeping this car a few years more than likely. That's what I always say, then wind up keeping them until they die from neglect. I don't mean to kill the cars, they just take second place to my hectic work schedule. Hopefully, this one will be the survivor. The first car I thought that would be my survivor was a 1994 Mitsu Eclipse GS, that car finally died at 270,000 miles. That one put up a damn good fight.
I was looking at some Corvette's, but couldn't justify the expense in my mind. Thought about a Camaro, but couldn't get the images of finely maintained mullets out of my mind. Then, I saw the Craigslist ad for this car, I have lusted after this model since I saw my first one in 1997, and since the 944 is coming up on some big dollar needed attention it will be sacrificed to the Broken Timing Belt Gods eventually.
I am moving from a Porsche 944 to this as my daily driver, it is my stand in car until I can find a good 951, or the 996s come down a little more in price. I really want a late 70s SC, but they aren't available here in Hawaii too often.
Porsches are my first love, but MB and BMW have always been tied in a tight second place.
Some stuff about me: I am 34, male, and married. Originally from Texas, but moved to Florida; Pensacola to be exact. Love that place. My wife is about to give birth to our second daughter in two weeks. I am a SSgt in the Marine Corps Infantry, so I do have some rough edges, but I try to remain civil.
I like shooting stuff, breaking things, driving, and reading. I'm not so hot on the running thing anymore. I am not very mechanically inclined, so please remember that if I ever ask for help on fixing something.
I am stationed at Camp Smith, on the Island of Oahu, here in beautiful Hawaii. I've been in Hawaii for 6 years, and am looking to leave here next April timeframe.
Well, thanks for reading my novellette, and I look forward to getting to know the personalities here. However, from time to time, I will have to neglect ya'll for my homeboard, which is Rennlist.
