Question new to mercedes and am looking at a m-class

Hi, I have been a vw/aido person all my life. I have loved mercedes but didn''t buy because of no awd till like 2000. Now I have to get a truck or suv to tow my snowmobile. I am looking at this. 1998 Mercedes Benz for sale
I don''t know anything about it. I read all the reviews and it''s all over my head. Lots saying they love it lots saying they hate it. I want to know what you all think about the 1998 ml320. I test drove a truck and I didn''t like it after all I am a car person. Thanks. Oh yah I am from Anchorage Alaska.

1998 was the first year of production for the M-class. Most experts say they're best from 2000-on.

That is not good vehicle to start with. It is poorly built, unreliable and ugly. Its going to cost you big bucks to keep on the road and not give you much in return (not unlike a VW I must say). If you can't afford the second generation ML (06+), then don't buy one.

Ditto, can't even begin to tell you how many problems that thing could give you.

We can start small with the $200 window switches that go bad once a year or the transmissions that go bad every five years or so, where should we start?

Owned a 98 ML for 10 years.

The engine and drive train are 1st rate. It gets 20 MPG and still drives quiet and solid. I have had a few switches and the tail gate latch to replace, but overall I love this vehicle. Will sell this one and buy a new ML320 in the next couple of months.

Oh yeah, I pull my boat and golf cart trailer with it... no problems.

No, I wouldn't recommend one to my worst enemy! There are MUCH better vehicles for your money. The first gen ML wasn't a Mercedes, it was a cheap a$$ American made SUV wanna-be. The build quality was abysmal, the materials were cheap, and the electronics were trash.
