radar dectector

I have a 2004 CLK 500 and I was curious is there any place else to plug in a radar dectector other than the cigarette lighter in the ash tray?

Also, any hints on what kind to purchase?

I'm sure is some way to hard wire one but why do you need to?

Some people like a hard wire up near the top/center of windshield for using a radar detector mounted up near the visor. I think it's especially useful for people that use a radar detector on a daily basis.

Personally I use a radar detector for long highway trips only. Since I move it between 3 cars, I prefer a cigar lighter plug-in. The battery-operated detectors sacrifice too much capability to be worth the added convenience.

After my post I wondered if there were battery-operated detectors. Thanks for the info.

You are welcome. Hard wire is a skinny wire hidden under the trim typically so very little cord shows, making for clean looking installation. I've seen nice installations in Porsche cars, I'm sure somebody has done it in a Benz too.

There is ValentineOne, supposable Passport and nothing for long, long time after that.
I never had a need to hide my detector, so my ValentineOne sits on top of the dashboard. It has an option for remote display for those who don't like the flashing lights visible to the outsiders. The good suction cups on VO also help to hold my GPS antena that come with cheap suction cup.
Cigarette plug work for me. VO has one of the best plugs in the industry. As we have topic on other section, lot of 12V plugs have the spring to weak to hold them in.

radar detector

I have to hide mine so I hard wired it and brought the wire (any 12vdc source and ground) through the firewall and under the trim in the corner on the driver's side of the dash with the plug still attached. A ball cap covers it nicely and allows me to see the display under the brim. I have the same setup on all my cars so I can move it from car to car using velcro mounting.

I've hard wired hundreds of them while working as a gadget installer with my bro in law.

In mercedes, we would hard wire to the cigarette lighter. We would run the wire from the customer's desired connection point down through the front of the headliner, down the A-pillar, through the bottom of the dash to the cig lighter wire.

Everything is hidden except for a couple inches of the conector.

You can use the coil cord and just cut the wire and splice into the cig wire.

Always solder and tape or use heat shrink.

Creativity is necessary in Virginia, that's one of the few states where detectors are not legal.

I've heard that too. In fact, the police used to confiscate them if they pulled people over and saw them. Just curious, does law enforcement have a way to electronically detect radar and/or laser detectors?
