Thanks Greg, really appreciate the feedback. Yes for sure I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow, let you know how I get on.

Hi there black, how much did the part and labour cost?

Happened to my 2004 C240 a month or so ago. I replaced the battery but it was a bad alternator.

Car has 31,000 miles. Of course I was only 3 weeks out of warranty.

Original alternator was Valeo, replaced it with a remann'ed Bosch for $187 at local parts store.

It only took me 30 minutes to remove and replace the alternator and I've never worked on a Mercedes before this. Took it to Autozone where they had a testing machine. They did not have the replacement in stock, order only, so I went elsewhere.

Dealer would have charged over $750 for a new alternator.

I'm certain the failure was in the voltage regulator which appears easy to change but would have taken too long to order and wait for delivery.

I'm not positive on the cost since my car was under warranty still when this happened. I do know though that the dealer I went to charged $160 USD an hour. If I were to guess, I would say parts and labor should be around the $750 USD like wblynch said. If you have no clue though how to put the part on, I would call an independent that will work on Mercedes. Independents will be way cheaper in labor costs. You could also bring them the part too and that will save you some money.

Well I haven't got round to doing anything yet. We're in the middle of moving homes right now. I'm (begrudgingly) going to take it to the dealership. If it turns out to being the alternator I can purchase a reman from Autozone. I think I saw a reman that cost $215 on their website. Certainly better than $750!! Then I'm sure I can convince our local garage to fit it for free, seeing as he keeps telling us it looks fine

Well my 'sneaky' wife took it back to the same guy who couldn't find the source of the problem in the first place!! Guess what? He still can't!! Anyhow he didn't charge her. So she's decided to listen to my advice now. She called the dealer to make an appointment, explained that she'd had it looked at already. He said it may be a software problem. Anyone ever hear of this before? Should be a quick fix, right?

Only takes 30-60 minutes to change an alternator. Pretty quick fix.

Sounds like the guy who couldn't find the problem in the first place just maybe used to work for the moron dealer who thinks it is a software problem. Only in the sense that his software may tell him if yours is a recall issue.

Good luck, Joe. Keep us updated.

Well she took it in today, turns out it was the alternator. Autozone couldn't guarantee the one they had listed was the right one?? Which was for a C230. Ours is a C230K. So she decided to have them put one in. Total cost $940. Ya you're seeing right!! Crazy. I never liked going to this guy but what could we do. The garage that we'd been taking it to couldn't find the source of the problem. O and there's more. While the car was in today they decided to 'check' for other problems. Why would they do that? Said we needed the coolant changed (It was changed in July). Said the brakes needed flushing. Said some front bearrings needed to be replaced, cost for that $740. You couldn't make it up. This is the same guy who told us the front strut(s) needed changing 9 months ago, cost $1,000. When we got a second opinion, ZERO wrong with the strut(s)!!

I'm guessing that you are out of warranty? The dealer will most likely charge you 1.5hr diagnostic fee and then tell you that you most likely need a voltage regulator. It is rare that we replace complete alternator assemblies. The tool we use to test at my dealership is a VAT. It has an inductive pickup which tells us how many amps the alternator is putting out as we apply load to the vehicles electrical system. I am not sure how much a voltage regulator costs but an entire alternator is around $700-$800 plus the labor to install and the diag fee.

Yes unfortunately, got the standard 4 year 40,000 when we bought it. I have to say and I was saying to my Wife earler that I'm dissapointed with MB. I mean we pay good money for our cars and I would expect more as far as reliability goes. I don't think I'd buy one again, we'll see. Of course when one suspects the mechanics are BSing us that doesn't help!!
