Question Outside Passenger Mirror

The outside mirror seems to be unattached from the mechanism within the housing. The switch is operative & the motor behind the glass makes noise, but the mirror doesn't move. How can this be examined in order to determine what is wrong? I don't want to break the mirror.

What model, year car is it?

Sometimes the plastic balls that pop into the back of the mirror housing pop out and you can pop them back into place.
