New Benz owner with some problems

I got as an inheritance from a dear friend who passed away a 1973 450SLC with 155,000 on the clock.

It was driving just fine a couple weeks ago when all of a sudden on the way to work it was dumping white smoke that reeked of gasoline out the tail pipe ran like total crap and was sucking fuel like there's no tomorrow.

I took it to Friedel's in Renton Washington (where I live) and they tried to diagnose the problem. I had them replace all 8 plugs with copper plugs as the previous shop has put in platinums which are a big no-no for these older engines.

Ted (the mechanic at Friedel's) said that the CO and mixture were just fine but the HC was really bad. It's running better than when I brought it in but it's still smoking like a cold diesel when I hit the throttle.

I should mention that when I got the car late last month I put a bottle of Techron through the fuel system to clean it out. Could the Techron have buggered something up like an oxygen sensor (does the D-Jet even has an oxygen sensor?) or schmucked up an injector by plugging it with the crud the Techron broke loose?

This problem isn't constant but it's happening between 50-60% of the time. I'm not to wild about trying to find a new or used ECU for this car, they must be like searching for hen's teeth. If you guys have a lead on an ECU that functions properly please let me know. I've subscribed to this thread so I'll know when there is a reply.

The diagnosis list that I have said that white smoke and rough idle indicate stuck injectors, or connector to injector windings is faulty.

I'm new to Benzes but have worked on cars and truck for many years, from gassers to massive diesels (like locomotive engines).

When this car is running right, it's awesome all the power I would ever want for a road car. And since it was my friend's I want it to be running right. But I really don't want to put too much money into this car even though I pretty much got it for free.

I use the Chevron Techron Concentrate in all 3 cars and it has never created any problems, MB even approves of it.
