Are all other pneumatic devices (door looks, door closers, etc.) working okay or is it just the trunk closer? If others aren't working, then it's probably a bad air pump. But if it's just the trunk, then the dealer may need to tweak the mechanism and check to make sure it is clean and functioning. Make sure there is nothing blocking the trunk lid from closing.

Ditto to Jayhawk. It's called the PSE, and it is a pneumatic system. There is a module and a pump but I don't know what else. There is no little individual motor running the trunk close assist function.

I'm willing to bet it's the trunk lid sensor (grey plastic pin ) that senses whether the lid is closed or not. It's about 9 bucks.

Even with bad sensor (or for that matter with the main battery disconnected) the mechanical key should still works, so his case sounds like the mechanical parts of the trunk locking system is not working.

The issue was not opening the trunk lid but closing it fully, if I got it right. You should not need the mechanical key when closing it. An he already explained it does close when operated like a normal trunk lid (slam it closed).

The auto-closure system would not work without battery power, you cannot judge if it is electronic or mechanical when the battery was disconnected.

I'd follow the good advice given so far (don't try the latest advice from Kajtek1 first ).

PS. did the Camaro have a trunk closing aid feature? If not, I'm not surprised it did not get broken. In any case, I've worked on one very long time ago and fixing it was not too complicated).
