1992 500 SEL Oil Pressure Issues
I am fairly new to this site, but still hoping I might be able to get some credible advice on some recent issues I have been having with my 500.
Recently my oil pressure guage has been dropping to zero after being on for 10 inutes or so of regular driving.
Yesterday I took it on a 10 mile freeway trip and when I exited my car sounded like a diesel. I thought I had blew a rod bearing or something, but after letting it sit 15 minutes it went away only to return within 10 mintues of driving.
Today I changed the oil and filter running 50weight and the oil pressure still drops fast and I hear a valve noise when starting from cold but it goes away pretty quick. I ran for 20 minutes and got no more knock, just low oil pressure readings.
I live to far to attempt to drive it to a mercedes shop and all other locals wont touch it. I ended up calling around and got a 30 year mercedes tech to help clear some questions up. He said that the pressure is more than likely caused by a faulty sending unit and the knock/tapping was probably a plastic oil line that runs to one of the rockers (apparently common issues with this car). Every known mercedes mechanic that I spoke with said the specs in the main bearings and rods where probably damaged/ to wide of specs and say I need an overhaul, but the MB tech said that is very unlikely in this car as this V8 motor is almost "bullet proof".
Any suggestions would be helpful.
