Invalid VIN

I just moved and I'm trying to register my gray market 1985 190D. The DMV is saying that the car's VIN is invalid. I verified that the VIN on the title matches all of the tags on the car. In addition to the DMV the insurance company is also saying the VIN is invalid and the issue starts with the fourth character. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Does anyone have an recommendations of how I can resolve this?

Your VIN

most likely goes something like WDB201-XX-XXXXXX, which is the chassis number.

Typical for a grey market car, your ID number follows the European Interpol protocol in place at the time of manufacture. Official MB imports followed the "alphabet soup" VIN format we have all come to know and love...

You are going to most likely make an appointment with the DMV and have the car VIN verified, and complete some additional paperwork. You did not list your location, so it is difficult to speculate beyond the above.

Good luck,

JR

Thanks JR. That's very helpful, especially after a very frustrating day at the DMV today. I'm trying to register the car in New Jersey. Ironically, the car is currently registered in South Carolina (where I just moved from) and the South Carolina DMV is stating that the VIN is valid.

Your VIN

is most likely valid, it just does not follow the 17 character format that the DMV and insurance company are looking for...

You might want to write to the head/commissioner of the DMV, explaining your situation, enclosing copies of all your documentation, and asking exactly what needs to be done in order to effect proper registration of a previously U.S. titled grey market car in N.J.

That way you can also document that you are attempting to comply with the state's registration requirements.

Good luck,

JR

Your VIN will be "valid" (chuckle) if this car was properly Federalized and this sign-off was presented to the relevant DMV at the time.

If so, the validity should transfer to other states.
