Would you pay thousands of dollars for optional goods and services?

Premium Protection Package:
  • Paint Protection
  • Fabric, Vinyl and Leather Protection
  • Rental Car Reimbursement
7 years for $1250.00

First Class Wheel and Tire Protection Package:
  • Replaces any damaged wheel(s) and/or tire(s)
5 years for $1295.00

Addtional 2 more years/100,000 miles service (for used cars)
An additional 2 more years/100,000 miles service to current used car's warranty.

Are any of these optional goods and services necessary or worth it?

The first is a pure rip-off and is the same thing as the s%^$ domestic car retailers try to charge. If they do it at all, it costs about $10. The rental car reimbursement is useless because most dealerships provide loaners for cars still under warranty (and sometimes for ones out of warranty) when repair takes overnight. This is a 100% rip-off and should be criminalized.

The second is a pure rip-off unless you are prone to running the car off the road and bending wheels and tearing up tires. Road hazards are there, but you can usually buy a guarantee from the tire manufacturer for $10 a corner or less. If you are in a traffic accident and bend a wheel, your insurance will pay for it. If you live in a place where the roads are so bad you need this coverage, move. If you tear up $1250 worth of tires and wheels in 5 years, you need to turn in your license.

The third is something to consider, since MRZ automobiles are breathtakingly expensive to repair. I don't know if that's the right number, but just about everyone advises extended warranties where they are available.
