Engine braking, hold a gear, drop a couple of gears to get ready for passing, etc.

All these plus I often tap the gear up at steady speed on cruise. At certain RPM the car does not change to a higher gear but would keep it once selected. Saves fuel, really marginal but also easy to do from the steering wheel buttons.

To me at least this means less, if not none of "real manual gear changing", I mean selecting gears one after the other.

Euro cars have the "M" program too but I'm not using it often at all.

I don't use mine at all unless I am testing to see if it still works.

Living in the mountains I use engine braking for going downhill all the time. The ML55 has such high gear ratio, that on some streets I have to go to "1".
When I am in heavy traffic waiting for opportunity to pass I also switch to lower gear, but it is rare, since the response of automatic is pretty sufficient.

Just for over taking. I don't like to kickdown all the time. It's nice just to get the engine ready for the pass.

It's nice in stop and go freeway traffic. You can drop down to 3 or 2 and it saves you from being on and off the brakes all the time.
