'99 clk 320 auto intermittent kickdown/stuck at 2k revs...possible MAF prob?

Hi all,

I've been experiencing a problem once in a while and would really appreciate any thoughts;

Whilst the car is no probs in normal conditions, Occasionaly when doing a kickdown, the revs drop to 2000 and then wont go above - the car still drives but keeps a consistent max speed and 2k revs even if I hold my foot to the floor, usually about 30 mph.

If I keep driving in this go-slow mode, it can sometimes clear up after 10 seconds or so, but other times wont go away.

no warning lights or faults show on db.

When I pull over, the engine idles around 1k, but can dip a bit below and bobble about threatening to fade out but never does, or has once. If I rev it the revs get stuck at around 2000, maybe a little above, but wont go over however hard the accelerator is pushed.

If I do a quick turn off & restart the engine, it idles, revs & drives fine.

I've noticed it is more frequent if I kickdown very soon after starting the engine from cold - and it is less likely to happen after ive been driving for a while, but having said that it can happen any time, & could be my imagination.

Something else I have noticed but not sure if connected - occasional the engine is sluggish through 2-3000revs then has no probs shooting up beyond 3000. The way it fights through to break free above 3000 revs and then lets loose gives the feeling of feels like a blockage in a pipe offering resistance then clearing (not that it is that..just the sensation it gives)

I should probably add that im actually a fairly slow & considerate driver, its not like i do the kickdowns that often, but when you know theres a prob, it makes me want to test it...also today pulling onto the motorway got stuck at 60mph,

Obviously quite concerned it could be a pricey gearbox job, would make my day if it could all be put down to a faulty MAF, fingers very crossed, any thoughs? many thanks

Hi, Wezzley, welcome to the forum. Please use the User CP link to update your profile with vehicle and location information as that is useful for many things.

Also, there is a forum dedicated to your car, it's the W208 forum and if you scroll down you'll see it. The general forum often yields less useful (or less specific) information.

While there are no malfunction warnings, you don't indicate whether you have checked for DTCs with an OBDII meter. Many parts places (and all AutoZone locations) will read trouble codes for free. Codes can be stored even if you don't have a light or warning indicator. Get the codes and then either search here or post them in your 208 forum and that will help. It could be a whole lot of things, but it is usually best to start with looking for codes and go from there.

You don't mention mileage or maintenance history, if you are over 60,000 miles most folks suggest an ATF service, with which I would agree. If you're at or over 100K then plugs and O2 sensors are specified for replacement. All of this is DIY if you have reasonable mechanical abilities and the proper tools. A good DIY for the ATF is in the W210 forum, same transmission, same engine, same procedure. There is also a procedure for resetting the transmission "learning curve" adaptation, which may in part be something you're experiencing, particularly since you say you don't usually drive that way.

Last thought, in your vehicle MY there was a transmission plug that could leak and push AT fluid into the TCM and cause ugly things to happen. Since yours is intermittent that seems unlikely but in your shoes I'd check it out. There's a DIY for that also in the W210 forum.

That's my .02 for now, hope that gives you some things to start with.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Hello Fellows:

Unless you go to the dealer or someone who has an OBDII scanner I am afraid it will be a toss to determine the culprit since there are so many variables and the patient is absent. However, here is what I would do in a pinch (providing that you manage yourself or have a garage with experienced hands loyal to you), if my assumption that, in both cases, we are talking of a 722.xx automatic transmission is correct.

1. Make sure I only go for petrol to garages of known oil companies and having good traffic.

2. Check that the admission -tank to injectors- is clear and ignition tuned up.
Particularly that no unburned fuel is ejected through the escape.

3. I accept that the transmission oil is not something to last a lifetime, and I flush and change the ATF and filter every 39,000 miles.

4. I do not drive with my hand on the transmission lever (it can place it in manual mode and lock it in 1st or 2nd, locking it into limp mode).

If all of the foregoing is peachy cool, then it is necessary to think probably in a valve plate unit, computer failure, or worse if the happening has damaged any torque converter or transmission box components components.

Good Luck to You Both.

Cheers, JV.
