Question Beemer owner wants a Benz

OK. So I'm new to the forum and have joined because I'm thinking of getting a MB for a daily driver. I have been a loyal BMW owner all my life owning 4 diffferent 3-series models and now owning an X5. The 3-series cars were all great vehicles giving me relatively few problems over the years and running trouble-free into the 200k mile range. However, my X5 has left me a little bitter due to several repairs in the one year of ownership and only 70k miles. For this reason and the fact that I'd like to down-size to a sedan I am selling it. I have considered getting a jap car for reliability but my soul just won't let me do it. I have always been fascinated by MB vehicles and think they are very classy so I'm considering one.

I am looking to move to a mid-size 4-door sedan and want some advice. I want an honest opinion on the reliablity, cost of ownership and advice on choosing a relatively hassle free MB.

For starters I'd like to stay under a $15k purchase price. For this reason I've all but eliminated the newer models (3 years old or less). In fact I kind of like the idea of driving an older vehicle so I am open to any year model going back all the way into the 80s. I realize I may be giving up many "creature comforts" found in newer vehicles by doing this but that is OK. I don't expect this next vehicle to have much more than leather, power steering, locks and windows. From my initial research it seems that an E-class sedan may be the car for me but I really don't know. For the moment I am leaning towards a model like the E-320 or similar. I am also considering a diesel version but have never owned that type of engine.

Given the fact that this will be a daily driver for me (my only car) reliability is fairly important.

Can someone please recommend a vehicle for me? What years did this company so rich in heritage make the best cars? Which were the most reliable years and models?
