C180 fuel gauge

I filled my C180 to full tank last week and noticed that after driving it for a few kilometers, the gauge falls to empty. Took the car to the MB dealer and have been told that the fuel gauge on the the tank is faulty. I have been told that both need replacement. However they dont have the parts in stock!!! Can anyone advice what the problem can be and if it is the fuel gauge then is there any way of checking its function? Also how easy/ difficult is it to do it myself. Do both gauges need to be replaced?
Many thanks
