Hi from a non-Merc owner, at the moment.

Hello,
I'm Antony from Kent, England and am looking to buy my first Benz, although my Dad has had many.

I'm currently tossing up between a late W124 coupe 320, or an early CLK320.
After driving mad french cars for years I need something solid and reliable for a 25 mile, each way, motorway commute.

Any recommendations? If I go for a CLK will a 230K be adequate?

Any help gratefully received.

Antony

W124 is a much better car. It's also much more reliable. Early CLK's were cheap C class cars re-styled to look more expensive.

Thanks for the reply.

The W124 seems more suited to what I want, but the CLK looks so damn good!
I have found a lovely 320CE, 1993, in black with the 5sp gearbox, but the seller claims it has no aircon?

I find it hard to believe a 1993 CE doesn't have aircon, can anyone confirm if they were shipped without it?

Cheers,

Antony

think in 1993 on that car the aircon was an option bit like the ford days off if you have a sunroof you dont get aircon and if you have air con you cant have and sunroof lol

looking at an old book its was an option or the A/C is not working if fitted and dealer dose not want to fix it

just looked on autotrader and out of 26 320ce's only 4 did not have Air con.

hope this helps

Love my CLK. Get one with matching lower trim, instead of the black plastic. Hang out in both car's sections on here, look at the photo gallery, note the issues and have fun either way you go. Also, if you have a photo of each car you are considering, I'd love to see it and we could vote based on that.
To me, you can't go wrong with a coupe or convertible Benz, I love 2 doors Benzes.

Thanks for the replies. I currently have a shortlist of 3 cars:

1993 320ce-24. Black/tan, no aircon. £1800.

1996 320ce-24. Smoked silver/tan. £3250.

1999 230k Avantgarde. Silver, with kick-ass hifi system. £4000.

All similar miles with ful MBSH. The CLK has already had a new bootlid and painted rear wings. There are rust spots on the front wings which are covered by the MB warranty and will be done as part of the deal.

My head says 320ce, but my heart says clk230. I'm not too bothered about loads of power, but I would like some reliability.

So, vote away and solve my dilemma, please!!

Cheers,

Antony

I would go with the 1996 320CE.

'79 280CE with 226,000 miles
'76 240D 4 speed with 190,000
'85 300D Turbo with 266,000 miles

GONE but not forgotten
'76 300D with 195,300 miles
"83 300D with 174,000 miles

Are you sure that 320CE is a 96? I think everyone else except for the USA stopped getting W124's in 1994. (USA was 95).

Either way get the W124 is would like reliaiblity, build quality and a real Mercedes.

Well its an N-reg number (license plate) which runs from August 2005 - July 2006 so it could be. It could be just an '95 car registered in '96. He does claim its one of the last ones made. Sounds like a good deal, but just look at that CLK!!

Yea, then its not a 96. It may have first hit the road in 96, but its a 94 or 95 model year car. Still that doesn't take away from it's quality and timeless design. It looks much better then that Chrysler CLK you keep talking about. Go for the late W124. You will love it and it is last real E class coupe. The CLK is a cheap C class that has been styled to look like an E.
