Am thinking about getting a first gen SLK230. What are the things to look out for? Is the retractable top a problem? Is it a lemon?

There are those that say that maintaining one (1997-2000+) model will be expensive. Are there any feeback out there from existing or previous owners? Or someone who has gotten one used as well?

Your 2 cents and more will be tremendously appreciated.

Should I not even bother and simply go for a an older SL (like a 450SL from the 70s)? Am looking for a roadster with some attitude and fun factor. Yet wouldn't be problem prone.

You need to check out the R170 Forum where there is lots of information on the first generation SLK 230.

In general when buying any MB remember the quote "There is nothing more expensive then a used MB".

Knowing the service history is very important. Neglected preventative maintenance can cost big time as the miles accumulate. This is true for all cars but more so with a luxury car than a cheap economy car.

Ditto, post another thread on the SLK forums. If I were you, I'd go with the 2nd generation (R171) and as new and with the fewest miles as you can afford.

The SL-Class is an entirely different animal. Between the two, I would rather have one of those, but the prices will certainly be higher.

The roof can be a problem at times. Other than that, the R170 is a great car. Easy to work on and solid. I have been surprised at how well it does. I use mine in the winter as well and it handles well.

Have a pre-purchase inspection done. If you are willing to do some DIY, cost is not really an issue. In 2 years I have changed the brakes and rotors and cleaned the MAF(all from the ppi), then the usual oil changes etc.
