Thank you all for you help.

I sometimes feel I am being petty about this but it's not like the old days where you could get one cut at the local shoe repair/key cutting kiosk is it.

Also being completely electronic if it fails I am going to be in trouble. I cannot rely on backup methods to start it (apart from the 2nd key).

I have spoken to him again today and something will be sorted out.

It makes you wonder how someone can loose a key the size of one of these.

I thought my old Range Rover keys were expensive at £115 each.

Great, glad it worked out well. You are "entitled" to whatever was negotiated and agreed upon, it's good thing you were firm about it.

Look at it this way: Unless you get the dealer to re-key/change the code on the key you get, there will be at least one and maybe two other keys out there that can unlock your car, start your car, and steal your car. That is no small matter IMO!

The missing key can be "coded out" with the Mercedes software forever, a "replacement" key will wipe out the one it is replacing, or they can order a additional key and manually deactivate the missing one.
My dealer accidently ordered a wrong replacement for my defective remote, and it took out the good one, they had to reorder another. Typically cars with the smart key system came with two remotes and an emergency key which was a plastic fob about 1/8 inch thick with no remote functions but would start the car and had a metal key inside it similar to the remote. They keys can only be ordered thru a MB dealership!

You must refer to older keys than those coming with current cars? For some time I have not seen a third key "emergency key". I can faintly remember a flat plastic key but is that from the time before EIS communicated with the key via IR? If I remember right, this flat key would not have IR and could not be used with current cars?

I got two e-keys and one flat plastic "valet key." When I bought my car new in 2000.

But was that valet key an IR key? Which car was it? My W210 was from 2000 but I'm not sure any more if it did have more than the two basic keys (this car only worked with an IR key). My W211 and W221 definitely only came with two keys.

I think it is an IR key because it has that red shiny plastic tip on it, plus it has a slide-out metal key; but it is only about 1/8" thick and I belive it will start the car and I have to use the metal key to lock/unlock doors etc. It is called an "electronic reserve key" in the Operator's Manual.

In this case the key must be one that would be compatible with the W210 I had and even should work on the W211 or W221 (would start the car as it has the IR transceiver). I might have a look at the US W221 manual, never know if US cars have a different set of keys with them compared to our cars.

Paul

good luck with you new merc, i too am in the uk, from posts on my RS owners club beware that there are some scams where the spare key is kept and then when you own the car someone comes and help themself to the car back, please make sure that the "lost key" is decoded and will not open the car, if me like with any lost keys i would be asking for a new set and new locks to be on safe side

hate to be bearer or bad new but this does happen so best to make you aware

good luck

Neil
