I certainly agree with you here Kent and I would never bash Toyota/Lexus (I own an older Camry) because they produce quality automoblies. Nothing is perfect, and their cars are no exception.

Yep, I owned a '02 'yota Highlander for 3 years/56K miles and had one minor defect (a brake light bulb burned out, if you want to call that a defect). Perfect reliability (and a boring vehicle).

LOL MB-SV, a solitary brake light burned out? What a pile of junk that Highlander must have been. Just joking of course, and my Camry is somewhat boring too compared to the Benz but it is the LE 2.5L V6 and is pretty peppy overall. That was my father's car when he died so I have a sentimental attachment to it. I just detailed it today and when I do that I am always impressed with the quality of the materials they used in 1991.

Consumer reports tests and evaluates cars using much of the same criteria they use for washing machines and toaster ovens. In other words they use quantitative measures to rate a product (despite what the gentleman above says, they do not gather data from consumers, but rely upon other sources for reliability data). Using quantitative tests and data, Mercedes does not always come off well, especially when you factor in cost. However, most of us Mercedes owner have qualitative reasons for buying our cars that cannot be measured. To me, it's that German engineering and the ride behind the three-pointed star. So what if all of that over-engineering sometimes leads to quality issues? There's nothing like the feel of driving a Mercedes. So if you see a car as an appliance, you'll probably buy a Toyota or Lexus. But if you have an emotional relationship with your car, then you'll buy a Mercedes (or Jag, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati, etc.)

To some degree all mass produced cars are appliances and commodities. The are all easily replaced.

Of course (as an enthusiast), the last place I look for thorough road tests in CR. But gathering reliability data is not rocket science and CR does a reasonable job of that. I've owned enough vehicles to verify the credibility of their reliability charts.

Yep, there is Road & Track and Car & Driver for the road tests. I agree that their data is good, and they are a non-profit entity that is not in anyone's pocket. They purchase everything they test anonymously from retail stores so no manufacturer has the chance to slip them a specially prepared unit.

Not quite, but I'll admit I'm splitting hairs here. They do poll their members on at least some of the various products in some fashion, but those results are reported separately from the quantitative reviews.
