I learned to drive on my Dad's 1972 280SE. He had it for 8 years from the time it was 3 months old, until the trunk rusted through (it WAS in Buffalo, NY!)
I always had a grudge against him for not selling it to me. It is the best car I have ever driven.
Anyway, there is a a circa 1972 240D for sale one mile from me. I have no idea what it might be worth. The body looks good when I drive by, and I don't even want to stop until I understand some things about it, so here I am!
Are there any really fatal problems I should look out for? Things like a rusted through frame in places you can't see? How about mechanically? What mileage is acceptable? The only diesel I have is the '02 Bug listed in my sig line, and that needs a new timing belt. I assume the 240D has a chain instead? Any suggestions would be appreciated, along with links to threads discussing this already.
Price points would also help. There are actually several 240d's for sale within a few miles of me. What kind of mileage should this 240D get? Does it run alright on the low sulpher fuels? Can it be easily converted to biodiesels? How about winter starts? Can I get a engine heater for it to slow wear and tear?
Again, any info would be greatly appreciated. I would love to get something that would out mileage my Land Rover (which does very well for a LR - 21 mpg hwy).
Thanks in advance.
I am trying to understand why the owner would be selling it NOW.
