Been hanging around trying to see if I can avoid asking this question as I figure it's been asked before, but I must suck at searching.
So here's the situation. I'm looking for a car to commute to work 28 miles round trip. There are a few Mercedes near by. All of the them are 1987 to 1995-7; W202's,w124's,w126's.
The prices for all of the ones I'm looking at are under $6K CDN, and seem to be in good shape and looked after. I'm not interested in a beater.
My goals for a car are:
1)get to work
2)keep costs to a minimum
3)buy something I like!
I am considering a Mercedes because everyone of these cars that I've looked at is solidly built and I appreciate nice things. I could buy a Civic but...
I'm having a hard time gathering enough information to make a decision to buy a Mercedes. I don't expect them to be perfect, but I don't want to be paying out $2000 a year in expenses, and I don't want to be stranded by the side of the road. I'm good with $500 to $1000 a year in maintenance, and I don't mind doing oil changes, straight forward repairs.
One last wrinkle, is that I claim my mileage so I have an incentive to minimize my costs for driving to work. Basically, I get to pocket what I don't spend.
I'm even considering a scooter!
I live in Canada too, the weather here is tough on cars.
So it really comes down to this. Am I kidding myself thinking that one of these beautiful old cars is going to meet my needs?
I'd really appreciate an honest opinion, and some numbers for maintenance please. Who knows maybe I can increase my budget a bit.
Thank you to everyone!
