I just registered but I've been getting tips from this forum before. I wanted to get everyone's input. I have a '98 SLK230 with 104K and I love the car and I'd wanted one for years, always had a thing for Mercedes. I've had it since March '07. It had 84K when I got it. Of course I like to have fun with it sometimes but in general throughout the week during my commutes or running around I drive pretty moderately. I've had to replace the camshaft sensor, the engines mounts (which I know is average for this mileage), the O2 sensor, supercharger clutch - air switchover valve, the alternator, and not to mention several trips for the check engine light being on, which now I know to not take very seriously unless I can tell a difference in the way it's running because it always says the O2sensor. I've had someother small problems to. Fortunately I've been able to change alot of these parts myself. And right now the bright lights don't work but everything else, the wipers and signals work on that switch and the top has a malfunction where if I open the trunk or just go over a hard bump it will start beeping at me and all I have to do is press the button to make it go through the motions of locking again and it's ok. I still have to have these looked at sometime but I keep putting it off because I'm don't want to put out the money. It seems like driving this car moderately just cloggs everything up and it doesn't run as good but I don't want to drive it hard all the time. I've had problems every couple of months since I've had the car and I want to know if I should expect it to keep having problems and about it's reliability. When I think of reliability I think of my friends who have Hondas, Toyotas, and Subarus who go 150k - 200k with pretty much no problems at all, or MAYBE 1 or 2 and from what I've read and my experience that's not the case with SLK's or really any late model Mercedes which should be just the opposite since they cost so much. It's ashame becasue you can't bet the build and ride quality of them. I would still take my car on a long trip and not really worry about it but these frequent little problems are costly and annoying. Well I would worry now because this last bit with the alternator left me stranded. I really don't know what to think now and I don't want to get rid of it because everything about this car fits me perfectly, but I don't want to keep throwing money away fixing it. Well, now that I've written a novel, will you please let me know your experiences and thoughts.
