The book on my 2007 E-320 states that the oil should be changed every 13,000 miles (or once a year)! I insisted that the dealer change my oil at 6,000 (for it's first oil change) and they thought it was unnecessary. I have always performed my own oil changes but this 229.51 oil is really pricey and the dealer can do it as cheaply as I can do it myself!

The reason to change the oil is it becomes acidic. The only way to determine what the Ph of your oil is is to have it tested. Oil from many years ago became bad very quickly but modern oil does not. This is because it has additives that control the Ph. The reason every car has a crank case ventilation system is to help control acid in the oil. The same effects that create acid rain are at work in your crank case from blow by. When an oil becomes acidic it literally eats away at your bearings. SO this is the reason to change you oil. So my answer to the poll is none of the above.
