advice on buying a Coupe - extended warranty

hi

I have just purchased a 2005 C230 coupe (65000km) there is about eight months of the manufacturers extended warranty remaining.

I was offered to purchase a next for three years for $2400 CDN ... I drive relatively low mileage so the new extended warranty would expire on time and not on mileage.

I just wanted to ask the question is it worth buying the extended warranty for another three years?

I'm a first-time Mercedes-Benz buyer so I'm not familiar with the kinds of things that normally go wrong in the 4 to 7 years

Any insight or advice would be appreciated

In general, it is a good idea to have a warranty on any Mercedes and I would advise that you buy that one from Mercedes because those are the best. You might even be able to negotiate the price down a bit. You are in a good position since the new car warranty remains in effect. If you want model-specific problem areas discussed you should post this on the W203 forum.

My personal opinion is that I have never had nor do I ever see myself buying an extended warranty for any car. An extended warranty is nothing more than an insurance policy and in the long run the insurance companies will always win. Sure, you may find a few folks where the extended warranty has paid off, but there are many, many more where it doesn't.

What has not been mentioned is how handy are you with a wrench? If you can fix things yourself then flying without a parachute is prefectly acceptable. If you are like me (a mechanical klutz) you're better off with a warranty.

Len, you are a frequent and knowledgeable contributor and I enjoy reading your comments. I happen to be one of those few folks you mentioned for whom these warranties have paid off. That's the reason I am a proponent of them. I am not arguing with you, merely expanding on my other post.

By the way, I do not buy extended warranties for anything else. I still maintain that a good warranty, preferably the CPO or new car extended one from Mercedes, is a good insurance policy. And I know you're correct in your assertion that most people lose. Otherwise the warranty companies would be out of business.

The generally accepted "Consumers Report" view of extended warranties on appliances and electronics is that they are a waste of money which is largely true. And buying extended warranties on the consistently reliable Japanese cars is also money not well spent.

But when extended warranties are being considered on Mercedes products built in the last decade, the warranty can easily pay for itself as many owners on this forum have documented. These Mercedes cars are not nearly as reliable as they should be. This is an example where generally accepted assumptions cannot be applied blindly to all automotive makes.
