Potential C-Class customer, some advice needed

I've got a VW that's been giving me troubles lately, and its a 2.8 VR6 Passat. The fuel prices in the UK are really starting to bite.

Now, where I am, there is one guy I've consistently dealt with who has managed to get good deals. I said to him that I wanted a Japanese car for reliability and cheap parts as well as getting a smaller engine. On Friday he phoned and said he had a Mercedes C-Class, and at that time I outright rejected it, though he did say it did have a smaller engine.

I'm going to phone him tomorrow and get more details, but I imagine it will be the 93-2001 bodyshell, the older type which is a nice looking car. Since he said its a smaller engine it will most likely be either a C180 or C220. Variant, I don't know, nor do I know the mileage or fuel consumption figures. Comparing insurance groupings in the UK, my Passat is a group 16, Mercs of that vintage are usually between group 11 and 13 which is considerably less.

Bear in mind I have minimal info, what should I look for. I'm looking more for reliability than lots of fancy unnecessary extras (made that mistake with a Citroen XM once). Whats the general opinion of the C Class in that era. It has to be an automatic, which is what this is, I've heard the auto boxes in Mercedes are extremely good and reliable.

Thanks for any advice/info/warnings in advance

A VW that is unreliable? No!

ha, ha!!

Skip the car. An 01 C class is very bad pick. It's a cheap entry level Benz made during the worst time in Mercedes history. If you think the VW is bad, then you will be in for a surprise with a first gen C class. Cheap, cheap and cheaper. It just might be more unreliable then your VW.

Have you looked at the new Subaru diesels? Most reviews have been very positive.

I agree. I had an 01 C240, the worst car that I've experienced in the last 10 years by far.

That bad?

Really the thing that concerned me the most was the price of parts and repair, but I thought I might get an enthusiast forums opinions first.

I did owned the 00 C200 Kompressor, I think car is not bad, it should give you the feeling of MB. Only problem is that these cars are very hungry, gas consumtion was close to my current S500 =)))

BTW, they also they have some corrosion problems.

Based on my experience with the 01 C240, the high cost of repairs (through the dealer) was the main problem as soon as the car was out of warranty.

Jade, this is the General Mercedes forum. If you want the real nitty gritty on the car, post it is the appropriate C-Class forum. There are a lot of well meaning people who watch this one, but your chances are better of snagging more owners, or former owners, on the model-specific forum.
