Potential C-Class customer, some advice needed
I've got a VW that's been giving me troubles lately, and its a 2.8 VR6 Passat. The fuel prices in the UK are really starting to bite.
Now, where I am, there is one guy I've consistently dealt with who has managed to get good deals. I said to him that I wanted a Japanese car for reliability and cheap parts as well as getting a smaller engine. On Friday he phoned and said he had a Mercedes C-Class, and at that time I outright rejected it, though he did say it did have a smaller engine.
I'm going to phone him tomorrow and get more details, but I imagine it will be the 93-2001 bodyshell, the older type which is a nice looking car. Since he said its a smaller engine it will most likely be either a C180 or C220. Variant, I don't know, nor do I know the mileage or fuel consumption figures. Comparing insurance groupings in the UK, my Passat is a group 16, Mercs of that vintage are usually between group 11 and 13 which is considerably less.
Bear in mind I have minimal info, what should I look for. I'm looking more for reliability than lots of fancy unnecessary extras (made that mistake with a Citroen XM once). Whats the general opinion of the C Class in that era. It has to be an automatic, which is what this is, I've heard the auto boxes in Mercedes are extremely good and reliable.
Thanks for any advice/info/warnings in advance
