There was a safety recall on the dealer installed hitch (see link below):
The recall concerns both Mercedes-Benz accessory trailer hitches installed by authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers and factory equipped trailer hitches. They determined that the hitch supplier modified the welding process which resulted in some of the weld seams connecting the trailer hitch receiver to the attachment bar used to secure the trailer hitch to the body frame do not meet performance specifications. This may result in the trailer hitch receiver separating from the attachment bar, creating a road hazard which may lead to a vehicle crash.
I called this guy Sean Weismann at Rallye Mercedes Benz in Roslyn, New York about the recall letter.
This guy Sean tells me that he could not find my VIN in the campaign database (which only covers factory installed hitches). I told him that Rallye Mercedes Benz where he works installed the hitch as an accessory item after the car left the factory, that's why it doesn't show in the database; how would it unless dealerships update that database with every accessory that they add to a vehicle.
Sean is insistent that the recall does not apply to my vehicle, that since the recall applied to factory welds of the hitch to the vehicle, it did not apply. I told him it has nothing to do with attaching the hitch to the vehicle, there are no welds, just bolts. I asked him if he even read the recall notice that I gave him. He did not, yet wanted to keep me holding while he glanced at it. I told him to read it carefully and call me back when he understood what it said.
When he called me back he said that the issue was the welds on the hitch that the factory installed and since my hitch was an aftermarket hitch the recall did not apply. I told him that the dealership installed a Mercedes-Benz accessory trailer hitch from Rallye (an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer) and the recall absolutely applied to that hitch and that there was even a picture of the hitch on the second page of the recall notice. Sean wanted me to take the time to bring the car in so they could look at the welds to see if they were okay and maybe reweld it?! This Sean Weissmann is absolutely clueless and should be fired for gross incompetence!
I am calling M.B. in New Jersey to register the VIN of the vehicle in the Safety Recall Campaign so that boneheads like this Sean guy can look up their VIN lists on their little computer screens and see that the recalled hitch was installed on the vehicle at Rallye Mercedes-Benz and is subject to the recall.
Damn, all this just to get them to do the right thing!
