You might find a first model year 1995 W202 C-Class for that, but I doubt it (C180, C200, C220). If $3000 is all you want to spend, I'd look a little earlier like a W201 D-Class (190E, 190D). The newest one of those would be a 1993 I think. Those were well made cars and I see a lot of them driving around.

There is...

an old maxim that may apply to this inquiry:

"The most expensive car one can ever own is a cheap Mercedes Benz".

$3,000 is not going to get you much other than a high mile, or "project" car.
Each has its pitfalls, so be sure you know exactly what you are getting yourself into before "pulling the trigger".

Good luck,

JR

You read my mind E-Class Owner and I stopped just short of quoting that myself. It's a very true statement with very few, if any, exceptions. The only exception I can think of is buying one from a friend or family member that is more of a gift than a purchase.

3 grand is going to buy you a peice of junk Benz that needs lots of work and has over 200k miles. You are going to need at least 5 grand to purchase anything of quality that doesn't need that much work.

I have to agree with mr.xpowerseller as well. I plead guilty of trying to let the guy down easy.

I entered the world of Benz ownership the wrong way. In 2005 I bought a 1998 E430 with almost 120,000 miles for $12,900 because it was such a "good deal". It wasn't long before I was throwing good money after bad, and I took a severe loss when I traded for what I now own.

That was an expensive lesson, but I'll not make that mistake again.

Get a W124 E Class (86-94) I've got an '87 300E and I've only had to do oil changes and a timing cover gasket replacement. Spent $2100 on the car and about $200 in maintenance in almost a year's worth of ownership.

87 300E, 163,000 miles SOLD
Current, 93 300CE coupe, 227,000 miles
98 Subaru Forester, 250,000 miles

You are likely to get better and quicker answers on the appropriate forum. Look in the sedan section and post this there. That is a W126.

You could do a bit older (1991) and get a w126. You should be able to find a decent one. Gas is not going to be cheap though.
