Electric window problems

Hi there
I am new to this board and apologise if this isn't the right forum.
I bought a secondhand 300 E TD about 5 months ago with 147000 on the clock. It is a lovely car and drives well but I have had problems with the electric windows since the start. The drivers side window doesn't work and the passenger side front works intermitently. The rear two have been fine up until recently when the drivers side has stopped. I have found that I have been able to reset the front passenger side by taking the fuses out and putting them back again in the fusebox under the back seat. This doesn't cure the drivers window though. I know that there isn't any mechanical fault as the window did start working again briefly after it had been in for a service. Is there a way of resetting the system?
I have also noticed that the air con doesn't blow out very cold (not helpful when the windows aren't working!). Is this simply a case of getting it re-gassed?
Many thanks in advance

Wardio...

Would you mind indicating the model year of your car so that we can point you in the right direction...?

Best thing to do is complete your user profile, so we have the full scoop on your car and location; this helps us to help you.

Thank you JR...

I have updated my profile. I live near London. The car is a 1997 300E TD with about 148000 miles on the clock. It is in good condition and drives very well but this window problem is frustrating (particularly with the a/c not working well). I have bought a Haynes workshop manual and will see if there is anything interesting in there.
I had my wife's car serviced yesterday (Vauxhall Zafira) and my local garage said they would charge me £80 to re-gas the a/c on the Merc. They said that this might not be the problem but they wouldn't be able to establish what the problem was without re-gassing first. Sounds OK to me. What do you think?
Thanks for your help

Tim

Re-gassing is the only way to find out if its lack of gas or something else (unless you can hear the compressor grinding away under the hood. Then its the compressor!!)

Is your car equipped...

with the digital climate control, or the European set-up with the rotary temp dials for each side?

If you have climate control, there are a number of posts on trouble shooting the A/C system in the W210 forum.

If you don't have the climate control system, a tech can tell quite a bit from attaching a set of manifold gauges to the system during a re-fill.

Good luck,

JR

Thank you, chaps...

I will go for re-gassing and keep fingers crossed. It is the european model with the rotary dials. It isn't making any funny noises and is pumping out air - just not that cold.

And thoughts regarding the windows? I believe I read somewhere that disconnecting the battery might reset them but I don't want to create extra problems.

Cheers

Tim

Your A/C could be checked for the proper pressure in the system. Rather than just filling the system and watching it leak out into the environment, have them do a pressure test and see if it's cycling normally.

If you have some windows that are never working properly, them check the window connections for possible corrosion at the plugs. You might also have a broken wire at the door flex point. My 2 cts Good Luck! Derek
