A foreign car repair shop told me I could use Castrol 20W 50 vs Mobil One 0W40 and just change the oil every 3,000 miles. Can anyone tell me if this is ok or will it create a problem? Thanks - Doug

MB sheet 229.1 approved oils
for passenger cars with gas and diesel engines, used to be minimum spec for latest (98+) engines, high detergent, dispersant spec suitable for normal drain intervals. Based on ACEA A3, B3. Note 229.1 oils are not recommended for MB's latest (2002+) 4 valve gas M271, M275, M285 and diesel OM646, OM647, OM648 engines.
If your vehicle is not equipped with a M271, M275, M285 nor the OM646...OM648 engine; you are using the Castrol GTX3 20W-50; and the expected operating ambient temperature is above freezing (actually 20F according to Castrol), I don't see an issue unless you are instructed by Mercedes-Benz (ie. your owner manual) that it is strictly prohibited to use 229.1 spec'ed in your engine.
from 1998 and up use synthetic only. 10w-40 would be great. on amg cars use the mobil1 0w40 extended service. 20w50 is way too heavy oil for engines after 1998

My mb is my baby. Consider Mobil 1 0w40 as your doctors RX. ( Prescription ).

Why would you want to change the oil every 3000 miles using a poorer quality oil in the fist place?
Many comparative tests have established that synthetic oil gives better and longer protection.
MB have well established and researched procedures; so why do you want to go for sub-standard oil change every 3000 miles?
The increased cost of synthetic oil is small compared to what that garage is recommending.
Find another service center, fast!!!

Castrol oil meets MB specs.
But why are you changing it every 3, 000 miles? Man that is way too premature.
And since these biscuit heads "might" have used dinosaur oil, tell me,
How did they change out your Oil Filter? The O-rings?
Something smells here.
Stay with Full Synthetic
Change out your Oil Filter and O-Rings.
Switch to a Summer Weight Oil.
