Question Buyer/Seller Etiquette

Someone posted a 600SEL on the local trader, and i emailed him asking for a VIN number of the car, cos he claims, he imported it from Europe and it was in Arizona all this time and he just brought it to Canada recently, and he replies...

Quote:
Hi it's a european Vin and is not recognized by any carfax site.
thanks
Thats it! no contact info, no details nothing. is he even interested in selling it?
And i was like "huh, that's not your problem", i email him back, telling him that my friend at MB can look it up for me. And he replies....

Quote:
Why do you want the VIN without seeing the car first ?
Also I have gone to Mercedes Canada with Vin and they can not pull it up either and told me to contact mercedes in Germany for parts or info.
Thanks
So i get a bit annoyed now, cos there are so many rollback japanese w140s these days, you can't trust anyone, And he says "Germany for parts"? what kind of MB needs those kind of parts? so i tell him, if you're not fake, then why cant you send me the VIN? and he replies... (mind you i asked for a phone number etc... 2 emails back, and he still hasnt provided any contact info)

Quote:
I haven't got a clue why you would think I'am lying about the Car.
....[snip rant about my apparent attitude problems]
Is it impolite to ask for a VIN number? Do I have an attitude problem for repeatedly asking him for the VIN number? Or was that a scam?

You're spot on requesting the VIN, and this guy seems to be running some kind of game. Run don't walk, away from this deal.

cruiseoveride;
Your Instincts were spot on! This guy is a Turkey and good you pressed the issue.
It's not rude to ask for the VIN or anything else you are not sure of.
Why? Because YOU are the CUSTOMER and unless your questions are answered to your satisfaction you do not have to buy.
Name of the game is to sell and buy.
If you have a Seller who wants to be defiant and cocky and does not convince
the buyer then all is for naught.

Rude? No Sir. You had a buyers right to ask.

I don't see why he can't give you the VIN if he's selling? Sounds more like a fake to me or this car has been re assembled using chopped MB parts.

Agreeing with the others that you have every right to ask for the VIN number. He's the one with the attitude problem and/or the seller of a car (once everything is revealed) you probably would not want to buy anyway.

Here's some more BS: "Car is running rich and not idling correctly due to Mass Air flow sensors that need to be changed". Betcha dollars to donuts either the throttle actuators or the control unit (or both) are faulty. MAF sensors are cheap, if that's all it was, it would have been done already. This could turn out to be a $10K repair for some poor sucker.
