Malfunction - Reduce Oil Level

This message came on tonight whilst driving, we stopped for a coffee, drove home and it didn't come back on. Still though, not good? The manual says too much oil was added? We only had a change two weeks ago on the c230k. Wife's goina bring it back to the guy that did it. Ever happen to anyone before?

Yes I am getting that message right now. I started an oil consumption test at a dealer because I think my car is using too much oil. After starting that, the next time I used the car's system to measure oil level I saw the REDUCE OIL LEVEL. I told the dealer and they said that it won't hurt anything and is much less serious than running the car with too little oil. Furthermore, to perform the OCT according to the MB standards, the car's dipstick has to be at the FULL mark. When the car is cold, I get an Oil Level O.K. but when it is warm I get the REDUCE one. I think the warm oil has expanded and therefore gives me the error message. If you are not doing what I am doing, I would siphon off some of your oil.

Mine has done that 2 or 3 different times usually within the first few weeks of a new oil change. I was also told "not a big deal". The slight amount it takes to trip the sensor for reducing oil isn't nearly enough to do any real damage, unlike running with too little....
Later.

Thanks folks, I noticed a few similar threads after I wrote this, the general consensos being the message should eventually go away. Well this week herself said it's come on a few times. Well firstly she brought it back to the shop last Friday, they took a look and said if it came back on to take it back again!! Well seeing as we've been getting the big red warning she did. They want her to book it in. Said it may be a sensor problem. What ye think?

My shop thought it could be a faulty sensor too so that's a possibility. Check the level using your oil dipstick. If it is high there too, then the sensor is working. My car told me to reduce oil level when it was precisely at the full mark on the dipstick but only when the engine was warm. It measured it as O.K. when the engine was cold.
