Open Carfax?

Does anyone have an open Carfax?
There is a 2007 E63 going through auction on Thursday and I just wanted to see if it was clean.

Thanks

If the cost of a limited Carfax subscription is too much for a potential AMG Mercedes buyer, perhaps rethinking the purchase is in order.

BTW, there are lots of folks on car forums that enjoy reporting forums to CarFax when these types of post come up. These CarFax narcs seen to enjoy screwing around with the forums and other members, so be careful where and when you ask for help, but especially to the members who offer to help out.

can't you just call the DMV and ask them to run the VIN?
Isn't that what Carfax does?
That's what i'd do in Canada.

A VIN report and a CarFax are very different things. The VIN just tells what the car was like before it was sold new and the CarFax claims to tell what has happened to the car since it was sold new. Anyone can run a VIN # but asking for a CarFax is technically a ripoff of CarFax, Inc... Some sites will ban you for even asking for one.

Can't you ask to see the CarFax report before the bidding begins? I don't know exactly how auctions work but for a car worth that kind of money, it's a reasonable request. If they refuse to let you see it, or they don't have one, that would raise a red flag in my mind.

where/how does CarFax get the information? Isn't it coming from the DMV?

I have no idea where they get their information. But even if it is from a public source, it is CarFax that collected, organized, and checked the data, and that is what they sell. And that is what they get pissed about when people try to obtain the information for free.

Looks like on newer cars Carfax gets service history from the dealers as well. I've seen report listing oil changes and small repairs.
In the past for a sample 20 years old diesel car with single owner in CA was coming completely blank, since nobody inspect those cars here.
