You can open the Model Guide at the top of the page for help too. With the newer cars the letters (SL, SLK, CL) designate a body style and the numbers are the engine displacement (280, 320, 430). On the older cars, they were not consistant with the numbers. For example, there was never a 1.9 liter engine in a 190E, and it is closer to a modern C-Class than to an E-Class. E at that time meant "Einspritzen" with is fuel injection in German.
Then there is a chassis number as was mentioned you are looking for a W123. I have a W210 which is a 2001 E320. Keep at it and you will learn what you need to know eventually. Believe me, there is much more than I can remember at the moment.
