Engine or Fuel Problem?

My name is Shawn and I have a 1990 Mercedes 300. Three days before I was to deploy I was driving to work and got about three blocks away and the car just died. It was very hessitant on starting back up and when it did it was spitting and sputtering and I had to keep it at a high RPM just to get home. To me it sounded like bad gas because it was winter, so I put some HEAT in the tank and changed the fuel filter but then it did it again this time 4 or 5 blocks away. Now it is like something is failing when it heats up. But I do not know if it is a fuel pump or ignition problem. And before I spend alot of money on one and not having it be the problem I want to be certain it is the right part I am replacing. Any help you can send my would be greatful, I get back home in 10 days.

Please be more specific as to the model. What are the letters after "300"?

Is it one of 300 diesels?
Those are common for exposing fuel (air into fuel lines) leaks at cold temperatures.

How do you know it is a diesel? Is it the "Heat" thing? I have never owned a diesel. I was thinking it could be a 300E or a 300SE/SEL or 300SDL. Not sure if the 300TD was made in 1990.

Theoretically it could be 19 years old gasser, but what are the chances?
Diesels on the other hand..... let's just say that about 90% of Mercedes diesel sold in last 30 years are still on the road.

There are a few 300SE/SEL still around. I have one. But really what I was after with my post was to direct our new member to the appropriate forum. I figured a search of the w124 or w126 might help with his problem......do both the 300E and 300SE/SEL have the M104 engine in them?
