Smile C230K Service A

Hello folks, new to the forum, my wife and i drive a 230k, the onboard computer is telling us a Service Type A is due, actually it's 200 past due. We live in NW Florida, I have two quotes from MB dealers to service it. $250 and $295. Sound about right? My other question is with rgds the mileage, we have 47,000 on the clock since we bought it from new in '03, any major work need be done about now? We had new brakes fitted a few months back and the previous service which was done was a Type B which I believe is a Major Service? Until now all our services were covered under the 4 year warranty. Thanks!!

My local dealer is currently charging $159, but they seem to charge less than most dealers. As for what you need to have done, that should be in your service booklet. According to my CLK booklet:
  • Every 2 years replace the brake fluid
  • Every 3 years replace the coolant.
  • Every 4 years or 50,000 miles check the condition of the flex discs.
  • Every 4 years or 50,000 miles retorque the steering gear bolts.
  • Every 4 years or 60,000 miles replace the fuel filter.
  • Every 4 years or 60,000 miles replace the air filter elements.
  • Every 4 years or 60,000 miles check the condition of the fuel filter nozzle seal in the filler neck.
  • Every 5 years or 100,000 miles replace the spark plugs
You may want to have the transmission fluid and filter changed. That's $190 at my local dealer

The "A" service is a glorified oil change. It took me 40 minutes yesterday to do it on my C280. 8 quarts of Mobil 1; fleece oil filter, cabin filter, and air filter. All other fluids inspected, none needed topping off. Like you, I had my rotors and pads replaced six months ago and had a new battery 8 months ago.

Thanks folks. I figured the A was basically an oil change. We had a mechanic do it and got a breakdown of what he did. Cost $229 plus tax. I know, not cheap, wish I could do the job myself. It's cheaper though than what the dealers round here would charge. We had a bad experience with one a few months. Tried to tell us we had front suspension problems which was going to cost us $960. Got a second opinion. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Crazy stuff. We sent the dealer and MBUSA an email about our experience and got the usual BS reply!

Another question. The mechanic told us the B service was coming up on 48,000. Now we just had this A done on 47,000. Seem odd? Said it had something to do with the onboard computer settings, that it goes either by the mileage or the time, whichever comes first. So he told us the onboard computer might come on at 48,000 saying a B service is due. Can this happen or is it a scam? Thanks!

When you do a service you reset the computer settings. It's in the owner's manual and your mechanic should know how to do it.

What Len said. Most, if not all, modern Mercedes have the Flexible Service System (FSS) that needs to be re-set during a service. It not only counts your mileage until next service due, but also is comprised of sensors that monitor the condition of your oil.

You should not be due for the next FSS monitored service for about 10,000 miles IF he re-set the counter to 0 miles during the last service. You'd better do it yourself because if he knew to do it, and how to do it, surely he would have.

Ya, they reset the computer so it shouldn't come on for 10k you think? They seemed to think it may come on at 48k for a B!! I hope not. O they said it would cost $450, what does a B service involve? Thanks!
