Post The most problematic Benz

I was bored again! and i thought i'd try something out.
I went to search and typed in the keyword "problem" in the "title only" search and chose different sections of the site:

And this is what i found:

model hits topics percentage vs General Mercedes
w126 458 20148 2.27% 88.15%
w124 455 13599 3.35% 129.75%
m163 438 26461 1.66% 64.19%
r170 392 24868 1.58% 61.13%
w140 247 7841 3.15% 122.16%
w123 225 11709 1.92% 74.52%
w201 221 7375 3.00% 116.21%
r129 178 5534 3.22% 124.73%
w202 153 4887 3.13% 121.41%
w208 149 8631 1.73% 66.95%
g 148 11534 1.28% 49.76%
w203 131 7427 1.76% 68.40%
r171 87 7610 1.14% 44.33%
w220 85 2890 2.94% 114.06%
w210 232 8213 2.82% 220.14%
r107 72 4523 1.59% 61.73%
w211 64 1003 6.38% 247.45%
General Mercedes 245 9501 2.58% 100.00%

Now i ordered them:

# "Most problems for a section"
1 w211
2 w124
3 r129
4 w140
5 w202
6 w201
7 w220
8 w210
9 General Mercedes
10 w126
11 w123
12 w203
13 w208
14 m163
15 r107
16 r170
17 g-class
18 r171

Note the above is based on percentage of problems to no. of topics and is a fair representation of "problems" to topics for this site.

So there you have it folks, the most reliable merc is the present SLK or a G-Class
And the least reliable are the present E-Class or a W124 (interestingly both are e-classes?)

Obviously this statistic doesnt take account of the psycographics of the people that own the car, ie A person who owns a W211 might complain more than a R171 owner (unlikely), whilst the R171 owner might have more "problems" and just doesnt post topics titled with "problem" on this site. </Disclaimer for those crazy Americans who try to sue people for anything>

Attached a graph (Lower percentage means less problems)

I would conclude the SLR being the most reliable one, no complaints on the 199.376!

Reading the popularity of the model needs to be taken into account too, plus the likelihood of a Maybach owner attending forums like this versus a C-class owner etc. etc.

And I thought the W163s have soooo many problems or is it your # 13, "m163"?
Thanks for your time.

Ya forgot yer statistics class lessons.....how many SLRs are there out there vs how many "E" and "C" classes out there. Ya, I'd love to test out that theory about the reliability of an SLR(DROOL!!!!)

I believe his stats methodology is correct. Note he says that the ratings are = (the number of 'problems')/(the number of topics). The figure he is showing shows the percentage of 'problem' topics in EACH class of chassis.

This just seems to be a quick and dirty 'analysis' done just for fun. Enjoy it for what it is.

Cruiseoveride: thanks for providing some light entertainment.

Cheers.

You've got to remember that this forum started in the late 90's I believe, so some model forums weren't even created yet. It's still a neat little find though. I didn't really expect the W163 to be 13th.

Neither did I.
To date our almost 10-years old ML320 is the most trouble free car I owned, or ever heard about it. Even being totaled in rear end accident and driven by our son it still runs on all original parts but MAF sensor, brake pads, tires and spark plugs plus rear bumper reinforcement replaced after accident. The only problem with our ML55 so far were window switches and washer pump grommet.

This fact that the the figure was a percentage of problem topics for sure sort of makes the statistics correct, a good point to emphasise, easy to miss from the post at a quick glance (I did).

It was clear that the "analysis" was not meant to be the most scientific and as accurate as possible but biased towards fun. As such, an interesting post even if one knew from elsewhere that the results were wrong for some models.

And that's only what you find on the forum, a huge chunk of MB owners aren't even online so you have to consider that as well. Also you must also consider that not all members post their problem (that's another hit for the General section ) and just lurk and find their solutions in the archives.
