Extended Warranty

I have a 2004 C230 Kompressor and my factory warranty is about to expire in a few thousand miles. I know that there are a few common problems with the C230 Kompressor. Would I be best off taking my chances or buying the extended warranty? I have heard that they have transmission problems and compression problems. Are they common enough to make the extended warranty worth it?

I can't speak for your car but my extended warranty more than paid for itself. I would recommend getting the MB factory one, as opposed to something aftermarket. I believe MB will warrant any car up to 7 years from the date it is bought (placed in service) by the original owner, and for up to 100,000 miles. The only downside in your case, is that their warranties become progressively more expensive the longer you wait during your new car warranty period.

MB's of that vintage need a warranty, preferably the MB factory type.

Yes if you can still get the MB factory extended warranty that is deffintaly worth the money. For aftermarket warranties I only think they are worth it if you have an S class or something of that nature. They rarely return the cost.

Be careful with...

aftermarket warranties/service contracts. There are a lot of exclusions in these policies, and the devil is in the details. If you are thinking about an aftermarket warranty, ask to see the actual contract and read it carefully; do not rely on the summary sheet usually proffered by the F&I guy or salesperson.

Good luck on your decision.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I have decided to get the extended warranty. I called a large mercedes dealer in my area and the quoted me $3,600 for the 7 year or 100,000 mile warranty. Is this a high quote or is it a decent deal?

Ballpark...

but I believe the price of the warranty is negotiable, so I would check around on pricing.

Just to offer a dissenting opinion - I would never, ever buy an extended warranty for any car, TV, toaster, whatever. Companies do not sell extended warranties to lose money. In the long run, the seller will always win. Yes, there may be a few folks who find that it will pay for itself, but if it was me, I'd pop that money in the bank and use it for repairs when needed. That all being said, if you are going to buy one, the Mercedes factory warranty is the best and safest.

The key word is "genuine Mercedes warranty" some dealers sell aftermaket warranties, and MB cant stop them due to the "independent clause". I would forget those and put the money in a CD

+1 with JR here. I have read time and time again on these forums that they are indeed negotiable. Just for comparison, I bought a CPO car with 52,000 miles and it came with 12 months/100,000 miles, the standard deal. I was quoted about $2500 to extend that to 24/100k and I accepted. Since then I've read a lot of accounts that the dealers will negotiate. So, even at the $3600 they quoted you for 36/100k that's already a better deal than I agreed to. I was lucky because I have had somewhere over $6000 warranty work at my dealer done with no hassle, most of which was during the 2nd 12 months for which I paid the $2500. Like most of the others said, stick with the MB coverage.
