But at the same time, MB penalize and make serious threats to the US dealers who are trying to make a sale to Canadians and effectively block these sales from happening.

personally, for a few thousand here and there i'm not going to sweat, especially if i'm looking at a $75k car. but fuk, the canadian prices are just ridiculous, eg....

[just pulled this from mb usa and ca websites]
USA - S550 4matic - $87,525
CANADA - S550 4matic - $123,000
that's 50% more!!!!

I'm not rich enough to be stupid

The hilarious thing is that M-B Canada just posted their highest sales volume quarter ever. So despite the negative hype, the buyers are laying the $CDN on the table at a record pace, silly pricing or not.

Not exactly a good analogy, Musikmann. The cost of prescription drugs in Canada are in part cheaper because in the pharmaceutical industry, the patents on name brand drugs run a lot shorter than in the US. Therefore, we get the generic drugs here sooner (therefore cheaper) than in the US. If I remember correctly, the Canadian government, because of the health care system we have here, also can dictate to some extent the pricing on the same drugs. It really has nothing to do with group buy pricing.

The original quote is incorrect. The Canadian market cars are not the same as the U.S. market cars. Canadian vehicles have different instrumentation, programmatically controlled daytime running lights, different bumper specs, corresponding SRS hardware, and I’m sure Mercedes Benz has a long list of other differences. After establishing that there are differences between the cars, pricing should be easily explained. The same reasoning is used when Californians complain that we pay much more for "milk" than many surrounding states – the "milk" sold in California is different, hence the price difference.

Here's an update: The Government of Canada has proposed an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (MVSR) to harmonize the Canadian bumper standard for passenger cars with similar safety standards from the United States and Europe. For additional details: Government of Canada to harmonize bumper standard - April 2, 2008

That's great news!!
Now I wonder how long will we have to wait until it's actually implemented and we can do easy shopping south of the border.

And that is another episode my friend...remember this is only a proposal, I guess the government has other priorities.

Isn't the harmonization of bumpers a rather small part of the issue?
