Speedometer/ dashboard light question

Greetings and salutations,
I have two questions concerning my '81 300SD First one, the speedometer works sometimes, meaning that usually after driving a few kilometers it starts working and shows me the exact speed for the rest of my trip, other days it just twitches once in a while and does not show anything. Today while driving I pushed the day trip meter reset button and it started working for a couple minutes and then stopped again. I had similar problem on another car I owned. There it was an bad wire connection - where should I look first on the MB?
Second question, the dashboard lights glow like they are running off an 4 volt battery - bad dimmer? Turning the dimmer switch they change from little light to no light.
Thank you very much in advance, I appreciate any help.
