2005 E320 CDI Transmission Downshifts Problem

My father has a 2005 E320 CDI, bought new, that has approx 40000 Miles on it.

The car on several occasions will shift to fifth (automatic), but not downshift no matter what is done. He is forced to stop the car, turn off the engine, and restart the engine. This seems to solve the problem but it is intermittent and his MB dealer (Useless Dealer IMO DeKalb/Sycamore Illinois), has not service notice, nor cared to investigate as it's intermittent.

My father wrote a letter to MB while the car remained under warranty, but they said basically, tough luck. Nothing can be done, nor will MB investigate further.

I've read issues with the 7 speed in Eurpean versions, anyone have issues w/ 2005 E320 CDI 5 speed auto ANY help is appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Tim, please post this in the W163 forum. Lots of info on the problem there.

Jorex, The info I am posting refers only to the 5 speed 722.6xx transmissions. I am guessing your 99 E300 has the 5 speed. If so I would post in your info in the W210 forum.

Inspect what is called the pilot bushing on the transmission for a small leak or seepage.

If you do not know what the pilot bushing is it is also called the "13 pin connector".

The leak from it is a common failure. The part has been updated and is $20. If you do not have decent DIY skills I would let a shop inspect/replace it with only the MB part. The aftermarket part is horrible and leaks again. If the replacement goes wrong it can damage the conductor plate and that is another $400 to replace.

If it were my vehicle I would first have all codes scanned with a shop grade scanner that read MB specific transmission codes as the first step. It could just be the kick down switch on the floor under the gas pedal of the ML 320.
