would like to change brake pads my self, did many on other cars not on my 02 CL 500 any exploded view diagrams or clear explanations would help just to do it right the first time. do I have to remove the caliper? or do the pads slide out like on my old porsche?
depends on the type of caliper you have. if you have floating calipers you need to unbolt the caliper as the inner bolt clips into the piston and the outer pad slides into the caliper bracket. if you have fixed calipers just remove the 2 slide pins that hold the pads in place and remove them.
I definitely have two slide pins but do the floating caliper type have the pins too? also do you have to receed the pistons back into caliper like on a chevy or do they retracked them selves?
on the fixed calipers, once you remove the 2 pins holding the pads in, take a big pair of channel locks and slowly push each pad in a bit untill its loose. then remove it. yes you have to push the pistons back in. i usually keep one of the old pads in one side so while i am pressing the pistons in the other side the opposite pistons dont pop out. same goes with floating calipers. the floating calipers usually have bolts holding them to the caliper bracket. once you remove the 2 bolts you remove the caliper and the pads are right there.
i'v purchased a pre-owned 06 ML350 6 months ago and it had 22 000km. Now it has 45 000km. The problem now is my transmission on the ML is screwing up. Recently i couldn't shift it to drive, neutral and reverse. I mean, my ML only has 45 000km on it, im sure it still has transmisson/engine warranty on it right? can someone please help me and tell me what i should do. My plans is to take it back to the dealer. Would they most likely offer a brand new transmission swap? would it be worth it for me or should i be asking for more than a simple transmission swap? MY ML ONLY HAS 45 000KM!!! It's like NEW and im already having this transmission problem, what if in the future it happens again and warranty is no longer covered, than im screwed....
i recently purchased a 1989 260 e for a great price... i have always been weary of " imports" although i have owned a few in the past and have done ok.. i have resolved a few issues on my new mercedes and need some info on setting the timing on mine. i know the setting is 9 btdc however i am not sure if the distributor is fixed?.. i cant seem to figure out how to loosin it off. can anyone help. also to discuss the issue at hand.. cold start is very hard.. once its going its good.. and power under 2500 is sluggish.. but after its great.. i have read a few forums and seen bad valves and such... but this motor is incrediblt silent.. no knocks. ticks or pings. would love to hit the timming and see if it resolves it. thnx so much.

first off if you couldnt shift it to drive, reverse or neutral, your transmission isnt the problem. on the ml, you have whats called an ISM motor (intelligent servo motor) on the side of the tranny which is sent a signal from the shifter lever on your steering column. once you put the car into drive or reverse, the ism motor moves the shaft on the transmission ( forgot the actual name, its on the tip of my tounge). usually you will get a warning on the cluster that says drive to workshop without changing gears if there is an issue. or either you didnt apply enough pressure to the brake pedal and it wouldnt allow you to shift. worst case scenerio is the valve body in the tranny is bad and you would get a new one. the valve body houses the sensor that detects what gear your in. but the tranny isnt the issue. getting a new tranny isnt as simple as asking for one. WSG has to authorize a tranny, you cant just replace it. its a process to replace one.
