I want to buy a SLK 230

I'm looking at buying a used 98 or 99 SLK 230.
Both cars I'm looking at have around 65,000 miles on them.
This would be my first MB, what is the general consensus on this model and model year?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The slk overall is a very reliable car, but like any car they all have their problems. I've had mine since 02 and only had a few minor problems. MAF needed cleaning, brakes, rotors.... you know the normal wear and tear stuff. The miles seem low , if its a dealer item ask for a car fax report, bring it to an indy and have a good look at it before you make your choice. Read some of the sticky's at the top of the R170 forum page. Good luck and welcome.

These are great cars, fun to drive and have. Like said above normally just regular maintence items as long as you keep the maintenance up to date. Good luck hope you get one and enjoy it.

One more thing to do if you buy the slk, call your local dealer with the vin# and ask if all the recalls have been done. There is currently one out for the rear tail lights.

I have been happy with mine. No real problems. Easy to work on. I would suggest that you have a pre-purchase inspection done at a good independant mercedes shop. I had one done before I bought mine. I went into the purchase knowing what repairs needed to be done.

does either one have a starmark warranty or aftermarket warranty? Dont worry about the recalls those are going to be covered with or without the warranty. I would suggest having a good mechanic look it over to make sure the front lower control arm bushings are good and the engine mounts are good, other than that the engines pretty well built.

Definitely make sure the roof opens and closes like it is supposed to. Does the seller have records?

Looked at the 1998 last night. I didnt look at the 1999 because it was a 5spd.
The 98 was in good shape, it's a private sale. The roof went down in approx. 26 seconds...I think thats good.
A little bit of paint peeling, but I'm going to get a aftermarket trim dash.
Really fun to drive....the seats are kinda hard - minor detail.
Overall I loved it!
He has all the service records from a local MB dealer and has owned the car since new.
Thanks for all the advice and I will chat with you all soon.
